PID Web - based in London, United Kingdom - was initiated by Dr. Marc O. Tebrügge (Editor-in-Chief) and is developed and maintained by the core development group. The website was created to provide a gateway and to act as a source of information related to the fields of Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Paediatric Immunology and Tropical Medicine. The contents is aimed at doctors and other health professionals - particularly Paediatricians, Infectious Diseases Specialists, Immunologists and Tropical Medicine Specialists and trainees in these fields.

The website went live on the 2nd of February 2004. The contents is reviewed and updated on a weekly basis by the PID Team.

The internet can be a useful tool to find information, but its use is hampered by the general, often commercially biased approach that many search engines are using. By providing brief reviews and links to relevant websites in each specialty we are hoping to help other colleagues to find the specific information they are looking for.

Finally, we are always grateful to hear from our users - whether short remarks, suggestions or recommendations of other websites - all comments are more than welcome.

However, the PID Web Team does support the concept of Open Access Publishing, particularly in the Bio-Medical sector, based on the fact that it allows fair and equal access to medical information for all Health Professionals across the world.

Paediatric Infectious Diseases Web has been positively acknowledged and supported by a number of professional organisations, including the Health On The Net Foundation, the Open Directory Project, Thompson ISI (The Web of Knowledge), the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID), the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), the British Society for Immunology (BSI), Harvard University (Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology) and the National Electronic Library of Infection (NeLI) which is run by the National Health Service (NHS) United Kingdom (click the respective logo to verify). Additionally, we are holding top-ranking positions in the two major internet search engines Google and Yahoo, as well as MedHunt and Healthlinks. We are grateful for all the support we have received from these parties since the beginning of this project. We would also like to thank the members of the Google-Team who helped us with useful advice when Version II of PID Web went live in July 2004.

The Core Development Team consists of four members - Charles Ebikeme, Nicholas Leakey, Edwin Lim and Marc Tebrügge who met during their MSc programme at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. They are a group of young, enthusiastic scientists who believe in the benefit of sharing knowledge and information amongst specialists from all biomedical fields to further the common goal.

Charles Ebikeme, BSc DLSHTM MSc (MBID)

Charles studied Biochemistry at University College London (UCL), one of the most highly regarded Universities in the United Kingdom. Since the early stages of his studies he developed a growing interest in the life sciences which is reflected in the courses he attended at undergraduate level: Microbiology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Human Physiology, Immunity to Infection, Advanced Molecular Biology, Biochemistry of Health and Disease amongst others.

He then qualified from UCL with a BSc in Biochemistry (Hons) in 2003 before joining the MSc programme in Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). His study units at LSHTM included: Parasitology and Entomology, Molecular Biology and Recombinant DNA Techniques, Analysis and Design of Research Studies, Genetics of Pathogens and Vectors and Advanced Practical Training in Gene Cloning. Charles is determined to pursue a scientific career and is currently undertaking a PhD program on Trypanosomiasis at the University of Glasgow.

Edwin Lim, BSc DLSHTM MSc (IID)

Edwin studied Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick, graduating in 2003. He then joined the MSc programme in  Immunology of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in September 2003.
